Wargentin è un cratere lunare intitolato all'astronomo svedese Pehr Wilhelm Wargentin.Si tratta di un cratere dalla forma alquanto inusuale: il suo interno è stato infatti totalmente riempito dalla lava basaltica, tanto da non avere profondità. Pehr Wilhelm Wargentin, född 11 september g.s. / 22 september n.s. 1717 i Sunne prästgård i Jämtland, död 13 december 1783 i Stockholm, var en svensk astronom och statistiker. Han räknas tillsammans med Johannes Rudbeckius och Pehr Elvius som en av den svenska folkbokföringens fäder, [ 1 ] [ 2 ] och som fader till den svenska befolkningsstatistiken .

On the floor of Schickard you nicely captured the two large dark lava flow out regions. On the floor of crater Wargentin you captured the shadow cast by the frozen lava ridge across the crater floor that is invisible at high sun. Very impressive sketching.

[1] Some formations of interest: Wargentin is the largest crater (84 km) filled to the rim (by lava?). Schiller is strangely elongated crater (179x71 km), it must have been created by and extremely oblique impact.

When you catch Wargentin in the right light (and Monday morning should be good), it has a fascinating story to tell. There is an almost inviolable rule that crater floors must be lower than their surrounding terrain. Crater Wargentin - posted in Sketching: Two weeks ago, I started three times a lunarsketch but the clouds only let me finish one. Crater Wargentin, number 43 on the Lunar 100 list, isnt flashy at all. But the fact that hes almost filled to the rim with lava makes it a remarkable feature. Wargentin is rather a plateau than a depression!
